NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY, NATIONAL JUNIOR HONOR SOCIETY AND NATIONAL ELEMENTARY HONOR SOCIETY SELECTION PROCESS

According to the National Elementary Honor Society Constitution, approved on November 3, 2011, by the NASSP Board of Directors, the selection and induction process of members to the chapter has to follow these guidelines:

1. Faculty Council

• A Faculty Council must be created to decide who will be inducted and who will not.

• It consists of 5 voting members appointed annually by the Academic Director/Principal. They may be appointed to consecutive terms.

• Chapter advisers are ex-officio and non-voting members.

• Academic Director/Principal or Assistant Principal are not to be included as part of the Faculty Council.

2. Eligibility of students

• National Honor Society (10th, 11th, 12th grade)

Students are eligible if:

  • They are members of the sophomores, juniors and seniors classes. Freshman (ninth graders) are not eligible.
  • They have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of a semester.
  • The cumulative scholastic average is at least 90 percent.

• National Junior Honor Society

Students are eligible if:
  • They are members of 7th, 8th and 9th grade groups. Sixth graders are not eligible.
  • They have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of a semester.
  • The cumulative scholastic average is at least 90 percent.

  • They have been in attendance at the school the equivalent of a semester.
  • The cumulative scholastic average is at least 90 percent.
3. Selection Process of Members

• Once the students have been identified based on their cumulative scholastic average, a candidate form is given to them to be filled out within a certain time frame.

• The student has the right to decline the candidacy to be part of the NHS, NJHS or NEHS.

• A Faculty Meeting should be held to fill the evaluation by the Faculty members to the candidates. (An evaluation form is available). Every low score given in any of the areas should be supported with evidence and shall not be based on speculation and rumors.

• After collecting all the candidate forms and the evaluations from the Faculty Members, the Faculty Council should have a meeting to cast their final vote. Selection for membership to the chapter is always to be by a majority vote of the Faculty Council.

• Selected students will be notified by the school by a letter sent to the parents or by e-mail.
