Washburn School began the second semester 2019-2020 on January 10th, 2020, with a staff and faculty meeting after having postponed the start of classes due to the earthquake and the seismic events that occurred in Puerto Rico. During the week of January 13-17, 2020, the school was open, and we have been reviewing the emergency plan and preparing for any eventuality, including the lesson planning for the start of the semester.
Last Thursday, January 9th, staff from Green Engineering Group from San Juan (composed of structural engineers, architects, and structural consultants) visited and inspected our facilities, including each classroom and each building. This inspection had a positive result, and we were awaiting official certification. With this inspection, we had scheduled the return of the students for Thursday, January 16, 2020. However, we requested a second inspection after the aftershock event on Saturday, January 11th, to ensure that everything still in perfect condition. This second inspection took place on Saturday, January 18th, where the result was also positive, again, leading to the certification.
We will be holding a meeting this next Wednesday, January 22nd to discuss the emergency plan, eviction, and the protocols that will be carried out if an emergency arises. We will also inform you of the adjustments that will be made to the school calendar to make up for lost school days due to this emergency.
These meetings will be held at the Learning Center, at the following times:
8:00 a.m. Pre-Kinder
9:00 a.m. Kindergarten & 3rd Grade
10:00 a.m. 2nd and 4th Grade
11:00 a.m. 5th and 6th Grade 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch break for staff and faculty
1:00 p.m. 1st Grade
2:00 p.m. 7th and 8th Grade 3:00 p.m. 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th Grade
We are planning on starting classes on Thursday, January 23rd, 2020 at our regular school schedule, as long as we receive the certification from Green Engineering Group. During that first day of school, all teachers will be discussing, practicing, and reviewing the emergency and eviction plan and the protocols and safety measures to follow with students. Each classroom will have an emergency backpack that includes the following: first aid equipment, N95 masks (Certified Niosh Safety Masks), emergency helmet (pyramix hardhat), eye protection equipment (emergency goggles), rain ponchos, gloves emergency, whistle, mosquito repellent, sunscreen, student list, radio communication (walkie talkie) for teachers, among others.
The safety of all our staff and students is essential to the administration of Washburn School. Therefore, if by Wednesday, January 22nd, 2020, the certification has not been received, the beginning of classes will be postponed, and we will be communicating it through the official website of the school: www.washburnschoolpr.com and via official school email. Other methods of communication will be Facebook and Instagram, among others. If the above occurs, we will be indicating what decisions we will make regarding the appropriate strategies for sending curricular material so that students can work from home.

We thank our school community for your solidarity and trust in our institution. We urge you, within the situation, to keep calm and to react appropriately in a real event, no matter where it occurs. It is a new attitude that we must develop, and that has made us rethink our routine, priorities, and values. We reaffirm gratitude for the gift of life, for the family we love so much, for our communities and groups to which we belong. Our faith calls us not to lose hope. Trusting God, let's face every experience making sure that we are not alone.
