First Grade Curriculum

MATHEMATICS:

Counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s, written counting by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s. Coin recognition and exchanges. Greater-than, less-than and equal to symbols. Place values in numbers. Whole and fractional parts. The number line and number grid. Model for number stories.  Basic addition and subtraction. Patterns, odd and even numbers.  Writing numbers in 1,000. Identifying missing numbers and missing rules in problems. Three dimensional shapes, symmetry, line segments in inches and centimeters, measuring. Showing money amounts with coins.


SCIENCE:

Weather: air, water and heat, the water cycle and weather instruments. The Earth’s rotation.  Planetary characteristics and celestial current events. Significant places, events and people in geological time. Hands-on planting experiences. The life cycle of plants and photo synthesis. The states of matter. Solution and crystal growth. The magnetic poles. Building a model that incorporates all six simple machines. Characteristic and classification of animals. Basic human anatomy (the circulatory and muscular systems)


SOCIAL STUDIES:

American history; important historical figures. Thanksgiving and its origin, US independence, National holidays: Martin Luther King, Jr. Day, Multi cultural celebrations: Las Posadas, Hanukkah and other holidays.  Current events, scholastic news, citizenship, working together, respecting rules. Learning responsibility, community service. Field trips, guest speakers. Making change by counting up, weights, temperatures, digital and analog time notation, recording data with tally marks, collection of data for charts, finding ranges, a middle value a typical value


LANGUAGE ARTS

Thematic literature, phonics stories, sight word recognition, word bases and ending, story comprehension, spelling, writer’s workshop, personal journals, daily integrate, writing, spelling approximations, phonetic spelling, patterns and core spelling words, memorizing and reciting poetry, class assembly
