Washburn School is a private, non-sectarian, multi-cultural, total English immersion school, for grades Pre-K to 10th grade located in the Spanish-speaking city of Ponce, Puerto Rico. Washburn School will continue to expand to 12th grade by the year 2014. All the courses are taught in the English language except for Spanish class, foreign language, and the cultural based Puerto Rican history class. The school fosters our Puerto Rican heritage and conserves a bridge between numerous cultures. We are committed to a full English language instruction, while keeping a relentless focus in teaching Spanish. At Washburn we embrace multilingualism in its active and passive form, as it becomes a social necessity while we move towards globalization and cultural openness.

    Job Duties
·         Assess students to evaluate their abilities, strengths, and weaknesses
·         Teach students as an entire class or in small groups
·         Grade students’ assignments to monitor their progress
·         Communicate with parents about their child’s progress
·         Work with individual students to challenge them and overcome their weaknesses
·         Prepare students for standardized tests
·         Develop and enforce classroom rules to teach children proper behavior
·         Supervise children outside of the classroom—for example, at lunchtime or during recess
·         Plans for appropriate instructional experiences for students
·         Works cooperatively with Director in developing positive educational experiences to students
·         Monitors student progress for assigned courses of study
·         Communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff, and community
·         Monitors appropriate records and follows required procedures and practices
 
Qualifications and Skills Required
Bachelor’s degree or higher from a highly accredited university

Fully Bilingual :  Classes are taught in English

Computer literate
Valid teaching certificate with required endorsements for grade levels or subject assigned from any state or Puerto Rico
  • Demonstrated general knowledge of curriculum and instruction
  • Demonstrated knowledge of various routine tasks, duties, and procedures and the ability to follow specific instructions
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise considerable and sound judgment to instruct students and manage their behavior, under the general direction of the principal
  • Demonstrated willingness to improve competency by periodically participating in some form of professional growth and to remain current with the latest developments in the profession
  • Demonstrated ability to deal with various ethnic groups
  • Demonstrated strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills required to achieve the goals of the position

Communication skills - Teachers must collaborate with teacher assistants. In addition, they need to discuss students’ needs with parents and administrators.
Creativity - Kindergarten and elementary school teachers must plan lessons that engage young students, adapting the lessons to every student’s learning style.
Instructional skills- Kindergarten and elementary school teachers need to be able to explain difficult concepts in terms that young students can understand. In addition, they must be able to get students engaged in learning and adapt their lessons to each student’s needs.
Patience- Working with students of different abilities and backgrounds can be difficult. Kindergarten and elementary school teachers must respond be patient when students struggle with material.
