$646,000 in Scholarships. 11 Acceptances. 14 Years at Washburn School in Ponce, Puerto Rico Since 2013. Senior Headed to Penn State on the Road to Neurosurgery.

Claudia Betancourt Ortiz. Class of Athena 2026. Washburn School since Pre Kindergarten 2013.

She received $646,000 in academic scholarships alone. Not financial aid. Not need based grants. Scholarships earned by merit. By a student from Ponce, Puerto Rico.

11 universities said yes.

Penn State University ($30,000). University of Miami. University of Connecticut. Michigan State University ($65,000). Saint Joseph's University ($124,000). Oklahoma State University ($27,000). St. Lawrence University ($140,000). University of Iowa ($60,000). University of New Haven ($140,000). Iowa State University ($60,000). University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras (Bachelor of Medical Sciences, Biology).

Claudia chose Penn State University. Her goal: neurosurgery. She is not dreaming about it. She is walking toward it with 14 years of preparation behind her.

Now look at what those 14 years produced.

A perfect 4.00 GPA. Not one semester. Every semester. Every year. From Pre Kindergarten to 12th grade. Never dropped. Never wavered.

Outstanding SAT performance. A university admissions essay written entirely in English that helped open every door on that list.

Student of the Year 2023 to 2024. Student Athlete of the Year 2023 to 2024 and 2024 to 2025. President of the National Honor Society 2025 to 2026. Vice President of her graduating class. Captain of the softball team.

Gold medalist in cross country and swimming for consecutive years. Runner of the Year. LAEC champion in softball. Runner-up in soccer. Competed in volleyball, swimming, track and field, and soccer.

Over 200 hours of community service. Participant in the University of Notre Dame (Indiana) Vision Program . Summer academic experiences at the University of Puerto Rico Mayagüez.

This is not a highlight reel. This is one student. One school. One trajectory that never broke.

There are students with good grades. There are students who play sports. There are students who do community service. And then there is Claudia Betancourt Ortiz, who did all of it at the highest level for 14 consecutive years.

Washburn did not make Claudia. Claudia made herself. But Washburn gave her the environment where none of this was unusual.  Where a student athlete is also a scholar, a leader, and a servant to her community.
