Core Values at Washburn School

At Washburn School, our mission is to shape students not only for academic success, but for a meaningful life of purpose, integrity, and global citizenship. We serve a diverse, multilingual community and believe that true education goes beyond the classroom. Our students are guided by a set of deeply rooted core values that help them grow into resilient, courageous, honest, respectful, empathetic, and open-minded individuals, equipped with a strong sense of personal responsibility and integrity.

To make these values come alive, we dedicate each month of the school year to one core virtue. Teachers lead structured conversations, real-world applications, and classroom discussions that connect these values to academic learning, relationships, and social-emotional growth. Students reflect, practice, and model these behaviors through daily routines, community interactions, and special projects.

Monthly Core Values Focus

  • August – Excellence
    Strive for excellence.
Excellence is more than performance — it’s giving your full effort with humility and purpose.

  • September – Respect
Be respectful to yourself and others.
Treat others as you would want to be treated — through words, tone, and actions. Class discussions explore respectful communication, cultural understanding, and self-worth.

  • October – Honesty
Live honestly and be precise and truthful in your speech.
We emphasize honesty in academic integrity, friendships, and personal accountability. Practice truth in big and small things, and build trust through clear and kind words.

  • November – Resilience
Be resilient in the face of rigor and challenges.
Students learn how to face setbacks with persistence, especially during exams and projects. Face academic and personal challenges with grit, hope, and patience.

  • December – Responsibility
Take on personal and academic responsibility.
Emphasis on ownership of one’s learning, behavior, and community role. Be dependable in your words, your work, and your role in the school community.

  • January – Empathy
Have empathy and compassion toward those around you.
Students explore diverse perspectives and practice kindness and support in daily interactions. Listen with compassion, serve when you can, and understand others’ feelings.

  • February – Integrity
Exercise integrity and authenticity in everything you do.
We focus on doing the right thing, even when no one is watching, and building inner character. Stay true to your values, even when it’s hard or unpopular.

  • March – Courage
Dare to confront uncertainty and positive risks.
Students are encouraged to speak up, try new things, and stand for what is right.

  • April – Open Mind
Live with an open mind toward others and their differences.
Through literature, discussions, and peer interactions, students reflect on being open-minded. Be curious, not judgmental, and learn from those different than you.

  • May – Love
Embrace the power of love by caring for and supporting one another, fostering a community where everyone feels valued.
We celebrate acts of service, compassion, and school spirit as the school year closes. Care for others through small acts of kindness that make our school a family.
