Important!

This morning, in their notebooks, the students wrote down the day that they will present their science fair project and what they will need for the hispanic heritage month activity on October 23rd.

5th Grade Science Class 9/27/19

This morning, read about the states of matter on page 56 and then completed the investigation on page 57. We also recapped the content with a video.

5th Grade Science Class 9/26/19

This morning, we completed the inquiry activity on pages 52-54 to learn that liquids and gases take the shape of their containers.

5th Grade Science Class 9/25/19

This morning, we completed a lesson check to review lesson 3. The students wrote it in the notebook.

-Physical change begins and ends with the same kind of matter.
-Chemical change is a change produces new matter with different properties.
-The law of conservation of matter states that matter is neither created nor destroyed
-5 signs of a chemical change
1. change of color
2. change of temperature
3. formation of a gas
4. formation of a solid
5. change in odor

Then, we began lesson 4 with the probe on page 49. Students completed this individually. I will be looking for the completion on the next occasion that I collect the books.

After completion of the probe, we encountered the phenomenon and wrote our questions on page  51.

Finally, we watched two videos on the three states of matter and how the state can be changed. We recorded the following in the notebook:

States of Matter Videos
- solid (ice cube)-  definite shape, definite volume (a drawing showing molecules close together with little movement)
-liquid (liquid water)- no definite shape, definite volume (a drawing showing molecules apart from each other with faster movement)
-gas (steam or vapor)- no definite shape, no definite volume (a drawing showing molecules extremely spread out moving rapidly)
*Adding heat (energy) can change the state of matter.

5th Grade Science Exam 2 Review

Here is the exam review for exam 2. Please understand that this is uploaded extremely early and because of that, we are still covering material that is on it. Students are welcome to begin the review as it is important to begin studying as early as possible; however, we will not be going over the review in class until Tuesday, October 1st, a week before the exam.

5th Grade Science Class 9/20/19

This morning class was spent with the 9th graders for adopt a friend.

5th Grade Science Class 9/19/19

This morning, we completed the probe on page 33. We also answered the phenomenon questions on page 35. We wrote:

1. There is a chemical reaction occurring between the material in the banana and the chemicals in the air.

2. It is possible to slow this process down by preserving it in different ways, but we cannot reverse the process.

3. The inside color also changes. The texture also changes.

4. The mass of the banana will remain the same because of the law of conservation of mass.

Then, we completed the lesson review on pages 46 and 47. We wrote:

Summarize it

If a chemical change occurs when materials are mixed, you might notice a change in color, temperature, or odor. New matter will be produced (solid, gas). If a physical change occurs, no new matter will be produced.

Three Dimensional Thinking
B. 500 g + 200 g = 700g

The mass of the materials after they go through the reaction would be the same as the sum of the materials before they react. Since it is a closed container, if there are any gases, that are produced, they will be part of the total mass.

Finally, we completed the module planning on page 66.

The different materials go through a physical change as they are mixed together. This mixture goes through a chemical change once it is heated. The chemical change will change the ingredients in the pancake batter so it can be eaten.

It was a good review of chemical and physical changes. We had come great discussions!

5th Grade Science Class 9/18/19

We had a great class today! We focused on chemical changes and the signs of them. We read pages 42 and 43 using the close reading strategy. We took the following notes throughout.

How does matter change physically and chemically?
physically- size, shape, state
chemically- odor, becoming a solid, temperature, color, forming a gas

When you have a campfire, the fire causes a temperature change, which changes the wood. The effects are increased temperature, more light, a change in odor, and a new material (ash).

Rust is a chemical change because air, water, and metal are reacting to change the material, and it cannot be reversed. painting wood does not change the actual material of the wood, and it can be reversed.

Then, we read and discussed how one can become a chemist on page 44. We continued by reading about and observing the primary document about conservation of mass on page 45.

We finished the class by revisiting and discussing the probe on page 33. We will finish this tomorrow.

5th Grade Science Class 9/17/19

This morning, to begin Hispanic Heritage month we read about famous scientists from Latin American countries. Our country of focus this month is Mexico. Two of our scientists were from Mexico!

5th Grade Science Class 9/13/19

This morning, we looked at images and explanations of different chemical changes. Then, we completed the foldable on page 41 together. We concluded class by making a list of physical changes and chemical changes on page 41.

5th Grade Science Class 9/12/19

This morning, we reviewed exam 1. Then, we reviewed the investigation we did yesterday and wrote our claim on page 39. We read about chemical changes, physical changes, and the conservation of matter on page 40. We discussed that in our investigation yesterday, we witnessed a chemical change and the mass of the materials was conserved. We also watched some videos to see some other examples of physical and chemical changes.

5th Grade Science Class 9/11/19

This morning, we completed the phenomenon activity with a video on page 35. We asked the following questions to explore this lesson:

1. What is causing the banana to change?

2. Can the changes be reversed or slowed down?

3 Are the changes affecting any properties other than its exterior color?

4. Does the mass of the banana change as it rots?

Then, we completed the investigation on pages 36 and 37. We learned that mass is conserved we combine matter with other matter.

Inspire Science Online Access

Good morning all,

I was unaware that the students have an online access with their science books. If you don't mind, could you please send in a copy of your receipt or send a picture to me through email so that we can set up their accounts? I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for all your do!
Ms. Trickett
