5th Grade Science Class 8/16/19

This morning, we reviewed the vocabulary words from yesterday's lesson and recorded them in the notebook. We began discussing chemical properties on pages 12 and 13. We will continue with this on Monday.

Homework for next Wednesday: Students should bring their science fair topic in.

5th Grade Science Class 8/15/19

This morning, we reviewed what we discovered in our investigation yesterday. Then, we read about matter, mass, and volume on page 10. We talked about different items in the classroom having different masses and volumes. We also discussed that an item with more mass will have a stronger gravitational pull, and therefore, weigh more. We answered the two questions on page 10.

1. The balloon has more volume because it takes up more space.
2. The bag of marbles has more mass because it contains more matter.

We continued our lesson with page 11 where we read about physical properties and how they can help us identify matter. We watched a video clip that explained how properties can help us identify objects. We used the video to help us answer the question on this page:

1. The physical properties of matter can help us identify matter. For example, we know most metals are reflective because light bounces off of them.

After our learning, we returned to page 5 to evaluate our initial thinking about matter. The students should have learned that matter includes solids, liquids, and gases. We recorded our learning on this page:

After learning about matter, I agree with Curtis because I learned that I am matter, and Curtis said that solids are matter. He also said liquids are matter, and I learned that water is matter. Finally, Curtis said that gases are matter, and I learned that air is a gas.

Finally, we returned to our investigation from yesterday on page 9 and gave each object a physical property in the last column of the chart.

acrylic rod- reflectivity
paper clip- magnetism
rubber eraser- flexibility
aluminum foil- conductivity
copper wire- conductivity
wooden toothpick- other
penny- conductivity
metal rod- magnetism, conductivity, reflectivity

5th Grade Science Class 8/14/19

This morning, we completed the inquiry activity on pages 8 and 9. We made predictions and then tested physical properties of different objects.

5th Grade Science Class 8/13/19

We had a great class today! We began with an introduction of Module 1 from page 3. We watched a video of the making of a PERFECT pancake. We began thinking about what would make a pancake perfect. Next, we looked at the Module project launch on page 4. At the end of each module, students will use what they learned to complete the module project. After introducing the module, we began the Lesson 1 probe on page 5. Each lesson will begin with one of these to see what the students know. After learning, they will return to the probe and see if they still agree with their initial thinking.

After completing and discussing the probe, we completed the encounter the phenomenon activity on page 7 after viewing  a video called "Egg Cracking". We wrote questions about eggs that we will investigate in this lesson.

We ended the class by viewing the inquiry activity on pages 8 and 9. I gave an overview of the investigation procedure in preparation for tomorrow.
