6th Grade Science Class 1/31/20

This morning, we evaluated our initial thinking by revisiting the probe for this lesson. We discussed the correct answer and why it is so.

Then, we revisited page 22 to answer the question about the pedigree. We began the lesson review on page 24 and will finish this on Monday.

6th Grade Science Quiz next Friday

Focus on:
yellow highlighted vocabulary words
applying vocabulary words
how to read and analyze punnett squares
how to write a ratio of a punnett square
use information to solve a punnett square

6th Grade Science Class 1/30/20

This morning, we watched two videos and completed a matching activity together to review the vocabulary for this lesson.

Then, after analyzing the fruit fly punnett square, we answered questions on page 21.

We began reading about pedigrees on page 22 and discussed on a child can express a trait that their parents did not have. Both parents had to be hybrids.

6th Grade Science Class 1/29/20

This morning, we reviewed the vocabulary words dominant and recessive. Then, we read about what controls traits on page 15. We added a lot of new vocabulary today that we will continue to review this week. Then, we practiced Punnett Squares on pages 18 and 19.

6th Grade Science Announcement

**There will be a quiz on Lesson 1: Inheritance on Friday, February 7th. It will cover pages 6-26 in the Unit 2 book. Because this is a quiz, there will be no formal review; however, I will post a "focus on" guide later this week.

6th Grade Science Class 1/27/20

This morning, we reviewed the results of Mendel's experiments that we -discussed last week. Then, we answered the 3-dimensional question together on page 12.

Then, we read about reappearing traits and completed the chart on page 13. We discovered that his experiments showed that one trait is seen about three times more often than the other when two hybrids are crossed.

Finally, we read about and discussed the differences between dominant and recessive traits on page 14. We practiced some problems in the notebook.

6th Grade Science Class 1/24/20

It is great to be back! I really missed all my students!

This morning in science class, we began talking about traits. We read and discussed pages 10-12. We did some practice with predictions in the notebook.

Short Recap of Today's Class

Good afternoon,
This document is just a recap of notes and work from today. It is not an organized review, yet it serves as notes from today's class. Some of the answers were provided by students through active participation in oral and written form.

Students may study from pages 97 to 114 for the assessment. We did not have time to reach the respiratory and circulatory system this week. I have decided to chunk the assessments in smaller portions of the material during these final weeks of class.

What is the main difference between mechanical and chemical digestion?

Both break down food, but mechanical physically breaks it down while the other relies on chemical reactions.

What organ systems work with the digestive system to carry out peristalsis?

The role of the muscular system, however, the nervous, respiratory, and circulatory systems are also involved.

Would food move through your esophagus into your stomach if you were lying down?

Yes, it would because the muscular contraction of peristalsis would still push the food down the esophagus.

Which part of the digestive system absorbs water?

The small and large intestine.

  OTHER QUESTIONS ASKED IN CLASS

What is the role of the salivary glands in the digestive system?

Why must waste be eliminated from the body?

What medical symptoms arise if kidneys do not function properly?

What does it mean if something is toxic?

How might your habits change if you had celiac disease?

Washburn School sixth-graders reviewed the different types of muscle cells by looking at cardiac, smooth, and skeleton muscle from various animals through microscopic slides. They used microscopes to identify the nucleus location and number and made inferences about their functions in their lab report.

In STEM applications, they studied how the brain can control bionic arms by using the patients' nervous systems to control mechanics.

As a college preparatory school, we seek to inspire our students to explore the various careers needed to continue work in this area. Doctors and nurses perform and aid in surgery to attach nerves from the damaged arms to the arm and chest muscles. Engineers work with making sure the mechanics of the bionic arm harnesses sensors that send signals between the brain and machine. Computer engineers and scientists work with how the computer processes the signals and with research in the area!

At Washburn, we hope we can inspire our Eagles to be the future of these critical fields. We already have graduates in Medical School and studying mechanical engineering on pace to contribute to our society and become the future leaders in these fields.

Today, sixth-grade students started with Mr. Lopezcepero. They will continue with him until Ms. Trickett's return and recovery.
