6th Grade Science Class 9/5/19

This morning, the students used the class period to complete a lesson 1 handout for points and the lesson 2 probe on page 29.

We also, completed the phenomenon to introduce lesson 3 on page 31.

6th Grade Science Class 9/4/19

This morning, the students used the first ten minutes of class to complete their infographics on page 26 from last week. Then, we revisited page 5 to evaluate our learning. We concluded that:

After learning about the characteristics of life, I can conclude that Tory's answer is the best. Even though the seed is in a state of dormancy, when it is given the perfect environment, it matches all characteristics we learned.

After completing the probe page, we completed the lesson review on page 28. We wrote:

5. Our bodies are made of cells, so it is important for like doctors to understand how cells work. People also study cells of other organisms, so they can learn more about how to prevent those organisms from making us sick.

6. Engineering and technology advances, such as microscopes, have allowed us to have a deeper understanding of living things. Without the advances, we might not know that all living things are made of cells, or know about the different parts and types of cells.

Finally, we ended the class by completing the lesson 1 planning section of the module project on page 49. We wrote:

We will first look at the samples under a microscope to determine whether or not they are made of cells. We will also look for other characteristics of life.

We can conclude the samples are living if they have cells and show ALL other characteristics of life.

6th Grade Science Class 8/30/19

This morning, students worked independently on pages 26-27 while I checked their science fair introductions and research.

We checked the multiple choice questions on page 27. Students will have ten minutes of the next class to finish their infographic on page 26.

6th Grade Science Exam 1 Review

We will be answering the exam review on Friday, September 6th. Students are welcome to work on this as soon as they would like. They are also welcome to bring a print out of the review to class and then simply answer the questions. Exam 1 will be taken on Friday, September 13th.

6th Grade Science Class 8/29/19

This morning, we read about the different types of cells on page 23. Then, we compared them in a venn diagram on page 24. We read about the ways organisms are classified and looked for key words in the classification chart. We read about viruses on page 25 and watched a video on them.

Science fair research and introduction due tomorrow!

Science Fair Experiment Sample Write Up

Here is a sample write up for the science fair. Please feel free to use this to help guide your child as he or she completes each step. This document shows how each child's write up should look for the presentation day in October. Each section should be compiled into one document, NOT one step on each page.  Since it will not be very long, they can use a folder instead of a binder.

Students should use this document and the other two that I uploaded last week to guide them throughout the process.

Feel free to reach out during the week with any questions! Happy investigating!

6th Grade Science Class 8/23/19

This morning, while I checked the science fair topic and problem, the students worked on a post-it foldable in their notebook. The students will have the first ten minutes of the next class to finish this. It is for 12 points.

6th Grade Science Class 8/22/19

This morning, we reviewed the principles of cell theory and then based on what we have learned so far, we collected evidence to support our claim on page 8. We wrote the following:

-When we observed the onion (living) and the salt (nonliving) under the microscope, we saw that the onion had small boxes with dots in the middle, which we infer are cells.
-Our primary source reading was by Robert Hooke who observed cork cells.
-Scientists continued to develop the microscope to look at other living things on a smaller scale which developed the principles of cell theory.

Then, we read about different kinds of microscopes and how each functions differently. We ended the the STEM Career Connection on page 18 and microbiologists.

6th Grade Science Class 8/21/19

This morning, we read about the creation of the first microscope and the discovery of cells by Robert Hooke. We read his primary source document on page 14. We discussed and wrote about how the improvements of microscopes have helped us.
  1. Microscopes have enabled people to learn that living things are made of cells by allowing people to view living things on a smaller scale and in more detail. They have also allowed people to distinguish between different types of cells. (on page 14)
Then, we read about how three scientists made the microscope even better which eventually led to the development of the cell theory.

6th Grade Science Class 8/19/19

This morning, the students completed an engineering lab on pages 13-14. After giving them time to develop their plan/design, they tested it, and recorded their data and observations. At the end, we watched two videos that showed how they could use the materials to create a magnifying device.
